About the Developing the Endoscopy Workforce Initiative

Welcome to the NES Developing the Endoscopy Workforce Website. These are exciting times for gastrointestinal endoscopy. In conjunction with the Centre for Change and Innovation's Diagnostics Collaborative Programme and plans to roll out colorectal cancer screening in Scotland over the next couple of years, there is a need to develop the endoscopy workforce. The Scottish Executive have commissioned NES to fund a minimum of 25 places for non medical endoscopists. Training will consist of a 9 month degree level programme at Glasgow Caledonian University, beginning in April and September 2006.

training image NES have also been commissioned to fund a minimum of 150 skills courses for medical staff. There are around 90 SpR’s in training in Scotland in either medical Gastroenterology or upper gastrointestinal/colorectal surgery. There are also at least 35 educational supervisors who, as experienced endoscopists, wish to become accredited trainers.

These skills courses will be provided at 2 training centres approved by JAG: the Cuschieri Skills Centre at Ninewells Hospital, part of the University of Dundee; and the Endoscopy Unit of Glasgow Royal Infirmary. GRI will offer a schedule of colonoscopy skills courses as will Dundee, which is also offering courses at regular intervals in basic upper GI endoscopy. Both centres will also provide regular Train The Trainer (TTT) courses to help foster a culture of training and learning throughout Scotland and thus improve service delivery.

training image This website will serve a number of purposes to assist trainees and trainers alike. Non medical endoscopy trainees are encouraged to register with the website and will find it useful to monitor their progress as they train and to use it as a resource with links to other training related sites. Trainers may find it useful in this respect as well and will also have the opportunity to provide feedback on the progress of their trainees.

This website is constantly being updated and improved and we hope you will find it both useful and interesting.
